However, the auditing profession is currently undergoing significant transformation driven by technology and automation. Over the past fifty years, the role of the financial auditor has evolved from traditional financial reporting to include complex IT audits, and is now entering an era shaped by artificial intelligence (AI), continuous auditing, and data-driven insights. This digital transformation offers substantial opportunities to enhance audit quality and efficiency but also presents challenges related to skill requirements, technology sensitivity, and fundamental changes to professional pathways.

Nepal’s digital journey offers a roadmap for firms in developing economies moving through four phases:

  2. Cloud Migration: Transitioning from local software like Tally to cloud-based platforms enabling remote access and real-time collaboration.
  3. Analytics & Automation: Introducing AI-driven audit tools and automating routine tasks like bank reconciliations.
  4. Advisory Model: Using time saved from manual processing to focus on higher-value services such as financial planning and management consulting.

Despite progress, resistance remains due to fears—especially among older professionals—that technology may replace jobs.
